As scary as the looming deadline for the debt ceiling is, I have faith, much like Senator Warner, that both sides will pull together and do the right thing.
Mid-Year Reflection… what could be done better?
As we now enter the second half of 2011, time should be taken out to acknowledge the accomplishments of the past six months should be recognized. However, we should also look at what can be done better for the remainder of the year. And this goes far beyond what is happening on Capitol Hill. Each individual can reflect on their own lives and evaluate what their behavior and efforts have yielded or not yielded since the beginning of 2011.
Self-betterment is a lifelong struggle. It’s hard to stay positive all the time. I’ve struggled extensively with it since moving to D.C. over a year ago. The wealth of smart, motivated, overly-qualified individuals has made me question my own skills and abilities. But D.C. has also built the fighter in me. I find myself willing to work harder for less and for longer to get what I want: a career working in politics.
Unfortunately, my generation suffers from an ailment that makes this all the more difficult: impatience. Every day I tend to examine my distance from my goal, rather than how far I’ve come. With continued work and preserverance I know I’ll make it, but the waiting game can be the mentally grueling and demanding part. But if I demand excellence from myself, then others will expect it from me.
Thank you for indulging my self-involved musings, as always.
Amazing article… pretty much what I needed to hear two years ago when I graduated. Pretty applicable to life right now as well. I feel altogether inspired to NOT seize the day.
Is there anything Oscar Wilde would love more? Just pure depravity and a mockery of the status quo. Can it be argued that Jersey Shore is not as much an object of artistic mastery than Wilde’s “Picture of Dorian Gray”? I know I’m speaking blasphemy to English majors everywhere, but how can we define art and exclude the present day? Art is supposed to touch people, move them to reaction, to discussion, to passionate feeling. Jersey Shore does that. I refuse to be called “mindless” and “vapid” for enjoying it. I can read a chapter of “The Canterbury Tales” and switch on the TV to catch an episode of The Real Housewives of New York without losing my integrity or my intelligence. Nothing that can provoke cultural reaction so astounding as Jersey Shore has can simply be labeled “DUMB.” Sorry ‘bout it.
